How did the show come to be? Fun background story: How it happened… The previous restaurant owners saw me last year in August 2024 at the West End Celebration in Sand City, CA. They asked me if I was interested in showing at Carmel Belle and thought I’d do well… I said, “Of course!”, but typically, these things don’t pan out, so I didn’t put much stock into it. Fast forward to January 2025, and I get a text saying they’re selling the restaurant and will pass my name on to the new owners…still no thought.
Well, about 3 weeks ago, at the end of February, I got an email inviting me to discuss a possible show??? It's beginning to show promise. But then only God can do this, The owner texts me a picture from 2 years ago (above) of the West End Celebration 2023. Mmmh, a coincidence I think not, saying I met you and remember you from 2 years ago so excited to see you again. The funny thing is that we both share the same birthday, and West End just happened to be on our birthdays 2 years ago… God is real, and moving. I am blessed. The owners are extremely generous and told me that I can keep 100% commission and ALL SALES. THIS IS NOT NORMAL! Please come out and support Carmel Belle and see the show running from St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, 2025, until Father’s Day, June 15th, 2025. Other holidays the show will cover include Holy Week, Easter Sunday, April 13th - April 20th, and Mother’s Day Sunday, May 11th, 2025.
Live Painting during Lunches: I haven’t got all the details figured out yet, but I plan to try and come every week on Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm-ish starting 02 April to do Artist meet and greets as well as live painting demos and answer questions about my process. If you want to see me in my element, this is the chance!
Why 02 April you ask? I will be attending the 2025 Breath in the Clay Creative networking conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina with Stephen Roach, host of the Makers and Mystics Podcast. More on this in a future post.
A Brief History of Carmel-by-the Sea and why I’m so excited:
Carmel-by-the-Sea, a historic artist colony, became an arts destination due to its charm, natural beauty, and the influx of artists after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, leading to the establishment of the Carmel Art Association. Today it is the premiere arts district for the Monterey Peninsula and is known internationally for its high concentration of Designer brands, over 80+ galleries, fine art, fine craft, fine food, dance, and world-class performances. Many Europeans vacation here because it reminds them of Scotland and is pretty remote. What’s not to love?
Here's a more detailed look:
Early Roots:
Carmel was founded in 1902, and by 1905, the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club was formed, laying the groundwork for an artistic community.
The 1906 Earthquake's Impact:
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 sent artists, writers, and other creatives to Carmel, significantly boosting its artistic presence.
Carmel Art Association:
The Carmel Art Association, established in 1927, played a crucial role in shaping the art community, serving as a cooperative gallery and a hub for artists.
Bohemian Enclave:
Carmel became known as a bohemian enclave, attracting artists, writers, and intellectuals who found inspiration in its natural beauty and unique atmosphere.
Notable Residents:
Throughout its history, Carmel has been home to many notable artists, writers, and other creative figures, including Ansel Adams, Mary Austin, Robinson Jeffers, Jack London, Clint Eastwood, Salvador Dali, and boasts many famous artists, musicians, and actors.
Art Galleries and Studios:
Today, Carmel boasts a high concentration of art galleries and studios, showcasing a diverse range of art, from local artists to internationally renowned ones.
Continued Legacy:
The legacy of the artist colony continues, with Carmel remaining a vibrant destination for art lovers and artists alike.
